In the cases of "Richardson," Hanstater," and
" Arnold," dealing with condensed milk, it was necessary
to trace the milk from the date of its being
brought into England, up to the sale by retail to the
public. The result of these cases revealed an undoubted
flaw in the Act, upon which I comment
elsewhere.
The case of " Rose" (milk vendor) shows the
necessity of perseverance. This man misled the Inspector
by giving two false names when sampled,
a sample of milk was taken from him and it was not
till eighteen months later that he was arrested, he
having in the meantime travelled from London to
Norwich, from Norwich to Hampshire and back again
to London.
The decrease in the percentage of adulterated
samples as compared with that of a few years ago,
may perhaps be due to the heavier penalties inflicted
upon transgressors and the constant watching of
fraudulent traders has undoubtedly had good results.
