The newly-born babe developed ophthalmia during
the first few days of its life, and has since died.
The mother, during her lying-in period, used to do
the necessary washing on a chair beside her bed and
hang the things out of the small window to dry. This
she could do by kneeling up on the bed.
When the midwife was attending she had to sit
on the bed whilst bathing the baby, as there was not
room to place a chair for her as well as one for the bowl.
