There was a substantial increase in the number
of visits arising from cases of infectious disease and
from complaints as to insanitary conditions : also in
attendances at the police court in connection with
legal proceedings. The time thus taken up accounts
for the reduction in the number of inspections of
workshops, outworkers' homes and food premises.
Notwithstanding, however, that the staff is one short
as compared with the first half of last year, the total
number of inspections has been maintained at approximately
the same level.
An interesting experiment in sanitary propaganda
during the year was the issue of a poster at the instance
of the Public Health Committee inviting residents to
report insanitary conditions to the M.O.H. with a view
to their prompt remedy. The poster was well distributed
throughout the Borough and elicited some
additional complaints beyond those normally received,
but on the whole the experiment rather confirmed the
impression that the means for securing the removal of
insanitary conditions are already pretty generally
known.
