The problem of noise has continued to engage the
close attention of the Public Health Department. The
solution is full of difficulties, but some success has
been achieved in one direction with the co-operation of
industrial concerns. The Noise Abatement Society (I
have the honour to be a member of the National Council)
is prosecuting a vigorous policy in its attempt to rid
the country of excessive noise. It is to be hoped that
it will have full public support, and that it will not
have to wait as long as did its elder cousin, the former
Smoke Abatement Society, before the seeds it sows produce
a rich, harvest. It may be a good augury that within
nine months of the inauguration of the Society a Noise
Abatement Bill was placed before Parliament.
The shortage of Public Health Inspectors continued
to inconvenience the full scale working of the Department.
The Council s training scheme is, however, proceeding
very well and one trainee who qualified during the year
was appointed to fill one of the vacancies. There are
now four students undergoing instruction.
May I once more express to the members of the Council
and the other Chief Officers and their staffs my sincere
thanks for their support and co-operation throughout the
year, and to the staff of the Public Health Department my
grateful appreciation for the loyal and efficient assistance
which they have at all times so willingly afforded
me.
I am, Mr. Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors,
Your obedient Servant,
H.D. CHALKE
Medical Officer of Health
