During the year under review renewed efforts were made
by the Medical Officer of Health and his staff to extend the
scope of Health Education. At the invitation of the Public
Health Committee the Central Council for Health Education
arranged a two-day course for Sanitary Inspectors and Health
Visitors on" Visual Aids and their Construction, Public Speaking
and Group Leadership" and a short evening course for members
of the Council on" Planning a Community Health Education
Programme." These proved to be most interesting and instructive,
and stimulated the Officers of the Public Health Department
to build up a panel of lecturers on various health subjects
such as general sanitation, housing, supervision of food and
the prevention of food poisoning, atmospheric pollution and
smoke abatement, public health administration, etc. Various
organisations in the area were approached with an offer to send
a lecturer to address their members on health subjects and as a
result several such lectures were arranged during the year.
Health talks have been given by the Medical Officer of
Health to the children of certain schools in the Borough, and the
extension of this means of health education would undoubtedly
be in the best interests of the community as a whole.
The exhibitions which are arranged outside the Council
Chamber on the evenings when the Council meets have often
been devoted to health matters, and on one occasion a most
interesting exhibition arranged by the "Family Doctor" was
left in situ for two or three days to enable more members of
the public to see it.
The display of posters, and distribution of leaflets is another
medium used by the Council for imparting information to
members of the population. This is carried out in close cooperation
with Division 7 of the London County Council by an
interchange of literature which is issued at the Public Libraries,
Information Centre, Infant Welfare Centres, District and Nursing
Associations and various Voluntary Organisations in the
Borough.
