Underground Bakehouses.
At the end of the year there were 11 underground bakehouses
in the Borough for which Certificates of Siutability were
still valid under the provisions of the Factories Act, 1937, but
five of them had ceased to be used for baking purposes. The
quinquennial review of underground bakehouses is due to take
place in 1954.
Restaurants and Eating Houses.
There were 339 eating houses on the register at the end of
the year, which is 20 less than the previous year, but still 138
higher than before World War 11. It would appear, however,
that the public faculties for communal feeding in the area have
reached saturation point, and there is little likelihood of any
substantial increase in the present number of such establishments.
The district sanitary inspectors kept these restaurants,
cafes, etc., under supervision and where necessary action was
taken to ensure compliance with the statutory requirements for
the conduct of businesses of this nature.
Street Traders.
Street traders licences issued by the Council in respect of
the sale of foodstuffs from barrows and stalls numbered 80
during the year. Regular inspections of the street markets were
carried out, and the premises used by the traders for storage
purposes were kept under supervision by the district sanitary
inspectors.
