APPENDIX NO. I.
PROPOSED HEALTH CENTRE, CAMBERWELL ROAD. REPORT OF
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH.
September 23rd, 1938.
To the Chairman and Members of the Health Centre Sub-Committee.
Aldermen and Councillors,
In February, 1937, the Council agreed in principle to the provision of a
Health Centre on the lines indicated in a report submitted by me to the Public
Health Committee.
In that report I suggested that in a Centre of this character the following
services should be provided :—
Tuberculosis Dispensary.
Solarium.
Dental Clinic.
Foot Clinic.
Rheumatism Supervisory Clinic.
Infant Welfare Centre.
Gynaecological Clinic.
Office accommodation for Health Visitors.
Probable accommodation for conduct of School Medical Services.
At the meeting of the Council on July 13th last, the Public Health Committee
reported the purchase of the properties Nos. 221-225, Camberwell Road,
and at the same time indicated that the purchase of the remaining properties
forming part of the site of the proposed Health Centre would be completed at an
early date.
It was also reported that the Public Health Committee had appointed
a Sub-Committee to consider, among other matters, the accommodation and
-construction of the building.
While adhering to the view that the above services should be included in
this Scheme, I am of opinion as the result of the request of the Health Centre
Sub-Committee at their meeting on July 7th last, that I should report in greater
detail as to the Services for which accommodation should be provided, with any
amendments or alterations of my original proposals, that consideration should
be now given to the question of the provision in the Centre of such services as an
X-ray Department, a breast-feeding clinic, a child guidance clinic, an exhibition
room and a lecture room.
Further, the Council may also desire to consider whether any or all of the
following services should be included in the Health Centre, viz.:—
Day Nursery accommodation.
Bacteriological and Analytical Departments.
Physical Fitness and Health and Beauty Classes.
In my opinion the Council should regard this Centre as the pivot of the
Municipal Clinic Services of the Borough, and where the interests of the inhabitants
