from the Registrar's returns came to the Health Department's
knowledge making a total number of 413 new cases during the year
from all sources.
The ratio of non-notified tuberculosis deaths to the total
tuberculosis deaths for 1938 was 1 to 12.8, as compared with 1 to
14.7 in 1937.
In cases where a positive sputum report was received from the
Bacteriologist and the patient was not notified within a reasonable
period a communication was sent to the medical practitioner
asking for an explanation of the circumstances under which formal
notification was not made. No case occurred where there was
evidence of wilful neglect or refusal to notify cases on the part of
medical practitioners.
