Shops Act, 1934.
Under this Act, the duties of the Borough Council are to
enforce certain sanitary and hygienic conditions in shops.
During the year the Sanitary Inspectors made 839 inspections
and 181 re-inspections of shops in the Borough, and the following
is a summary of the infringements noted from these inspections :
Provision of suitable and sufficient means of maintaining a
reasonable temperature 6.
Provision of suitable and sufficient sanitary conveniences 1.
Appropriate action was taken in all these cases.
Pharmacy and Poisons Act, 1933.
At the end of the year there were 172 traders in poisons used
mainly for household purposes on the register.
The Sanitary Inspectors made 191 inspections and 22 reinspections
of the premises of these traders and where necessary
cautions were administered for minor infringements of the Act,
and the attention of the retailer was drawn to the provisions of the
Act.
Smoke Abatement.
During the year 37 observations of factory chimneys were
carried out by the Sanitary Inspectors.
In 10 instances offences were committed and notices were
served on the owners of the premises concerned to abate the
nuisance.
It was not necessary to institute legal proceedings.
When offences are recorded, it is the practice of the Sanitary
Inspectors to offer advice as to the best method of preventing a
nuisance caused by the emission of smoke and grit, and it has
been found that these suggestions have always been willingly
accepted by the management of the factories concerned.
Swimming Baths.
The water in all the Council's Swimming Baths is filtered,
aerated and chemically treated.
Samples of the swimming bath water are taken periodically
each year and, in accordance with the instructions of the Public
Service Committee, samples of the water are taken for bacteriological
and chemical examination in the months of January, March,
