HOUSING
Satisfactory progress was made with the Council's Housing
Schemes. Two-hundred and fifteen new dwellings were
completed during the year and 395 were in the course of erection
at the 31st December. The total number of tenancies under
the control of this Authority at the end of the year was 7,145
made up as follows : —
Requisitioned properties 5,626
Prefabricated bungalows 519
Permanent housing 1,000
Five-hundred and forty-seven families were rehoused by
this Council during the year and 6,767 applications were
outstanding at the end of December.
Slum Clearance.
At the request of the London County Council a preliminary
survey was undertaken early in the year and a list of potential
Clearance Areas was prepared and submitted to that Authority
for consideration together with a map of the Borough on which
such areas were indicated.
Owing to the outbreak of the war in 1939, action was
postponed in respect of eight Clearance Areas which had already
been declared. As the result of further action by this Council,
however, the buildings in three of these areas had been
demolished by the end of the year under review, and endeavours
were being made to rehouse the only remaining tenant in another
of these areas.
Individual Unfit Houses capable of being rendered fit at
reasonable expense.
Twenty-two houses were represented during the year as
unfit for human habitation but capable of being rendered so fit
at a reasonable expense.
Informal action was taken for the repair of 10 houses and
14 formal notices were served under the provisions of the Housing
Acts, 1936/1949.
