SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF THE AREA.
The Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell covers an area of
4,480 acres, and is divided into 20 Wards. The northern portion
of the Borough principally houses a working-class population, and
is congested in places. In the southern part of Camberwell the
houses are of a better type, many of them possessing extensive
gardens. There are several Open Spaces in this part of the
Borough.
Population.
The Registrar-General has estimated the population of the
Borough at the middle of 1926 to be 275,400, and it is on this
figure that the birth and death rates for the Borough are calculated.
It should be noted that the population figure for 1926 is
stated to be the same as that recorded for the previous year.
