Maternity Ward.
During the year the Municipal patients made 651 attendances
at the ante-natal clinic, St. Giles' Hospital, in connection with the
Council's Maternity Ward Scheme. The importance and the
value of ante-natal supervision may be judged by the following
summary, which shows the number and nature of the conditions
found as a result of these examinations: —
Contracted Pelvis 43
Varicose Veins 6
Excessive Vomiting 7
Albuminuria 6
Vaginal Discharge 4
Ante-partum Haemorrhage 1
Skin Diseases 3
Carious Teeth 3
Pendulous Abdomen 1
Other Defects 4
Of the 153 patients confined, 138 had normal deliveries and
15 were abnormal, 8 requiring forceps delivery, 2 twins, 2
Caesarean sections, and 1 retained placenta. Induction had to
be practised in 5 instances, 3 for small pelvis at the 39th week,
1 for post-maturity, and 1 for pendulous abdomen. No abnormalities
occurred in these deliveries.
All patients were examined before leaving hospital for the
purpose of discovering any after effects requiring treatment. In
connection with these examinations it was found necessary for
treatment to be carried out for the following abnormalities: —
Retroversion 6
Retroflexion 2
Kidney Diseases 1
Old Perineal tear 1
Ovarian Cyst 1
Of the 155 children born there were 6 deaths. One premature
died the second day after birth; 4 still-births; and one child died
8 days after birth. Three other children were born with abnormal
conditions: one child with hypertrophic stenosis, one with two
thumbs, and one with temporary facial paralysis.
