HOUSING.
Overcrowding.
Overcrowding is still prevalent, especially in the northern
part of the Borough. 155 cases of overcrowding came to the
notice of the Health Department during the year. In 80 instances
a letter was given to assist the family to obtain accommodation
on one of the London County Council Housing Estates.
Information received from the London County Council that
50 families, living in unhealthy or overcrowded conditions, had
been invited to view accommodation on one of the Council's
estates. The owner or tenant of each house in which these
families were living were warned of the steps that would be taken
if the vacated accommodation again became overcrowded.
Rent and Mortgage, Interest Restrictions Acts, 1920-1923.
During the year 11 applications were received from tenants
for certificates under these Acts, and in every case a certificate
was granted.
Notices were served on the owners of the premises to abate
such nuisances as could be dealt with under the Public Health
(London) Act, 1891.
Houses Let in Lodgings.
By-laws framed by the London County Council under the
Public Health (London) Act, 1891, and Section 6 of the Housing
Act, 1925, with respect to houses intended or used for occupation
by the working classes and let in lodgings or occupied by members
of more than one family, were confirmed by the Minister of
Health in 1925.
The Clauses of these By-laws under which the Council can
require considerable structural alterations so as to provide more
satisfactory water closet, washing and food accommodation, and
the lighting of every common staircase, do not come into operation
until six months after the Pent and Mortgage Interest (Restrictions)
Acts, or any re-enactments thereof, shall have ceased
to be in force.
At the present time there are 297 houses let in lodgings on
the Register.
No additions to this list were made during the year.
