Section 50
Under this section of the Act it is the Council's responsibility
to arrange for the burial or cremation of a person dying in the
Borough where there are no relatives, or others, who would be prepared
to make the funeral arrangements. Where possible in such
cases, the Council's expenses, inclusive of an administrative charge,
are recoverable from the deceased's estate.
During the year, funeral arrangements were made for two unknown
still-born children, whose bodies were recovered from the
Thames, and for an old man who was found dead in his flat by one
of the department's Public Health Assistants. In the latter case it
was not possible to trace any near relatives although it was believed
that the deceased had a daughter who had lived in Birmingham.
