V.—MATERNITY AND CHILD
WELFARE.
FAIRBY GRANGE CONVALESCENT HOME.
The total number of patients received into the home during the
year, including mothers, babies and toddlers, was 357, a decrease on
the figures for 1938.
Number of women admitted 173
Number of babies admitted 65
Number of toddlers admitted 119
MIDWIFERY SERVICE.
During the year 1939 domiciliary midwifery practice, so far as it
concerns midwives, came under the control of the London County
Council, and all midwives practising privately in this borough surrendered
their certificates. Prior to this change, which took place in
the middle of the year, the Borough Council under their own scheme
then existing paid the whole of the midwives' fees in 75 cases and a
portion of the fees in 36 other cases.

OBSTETRIC AND PUERPERAL FEVER CONSULTANTS. The number of consultations during the year was as follows:—

CHILD LIFE PROTECTION.
The number of foster-mothers and children in this borough is
happily very small, and no difficulty has been experienced in dealing
with these cases during the year. There were 7 foster-mothers with
8 children and 39 visits were paid by the visitor.
