ACUTE PRIMARY AND ACUTE INFLUENZAL PNEUMONIA.
One hundred and twelve cases of acute primary and
acute influenzal pneumonia were notified during the year ; of
these 10 cases were of the influenzal variety. Home nursing was
provided by the Council in 51 cases and 28 patients were sent to
hospital.
MEASLES.
The County of London (Measles and Whooping Cough)
Regulations, 1938, came into force on the Ist October, 1938, on
which date the Bermondsey (Whooping Cough and Measles)
Regulations, 1936, were rescinded. Under the latter regulations
only cases under five years of age were notifiable, but the new
regulations provide for the notification of cases irrespective of age.
The number of cases of measles which occurred during the
year was 1,574 ; of these 889 cases were notified under the regulations
and an additional 685 cases were reported to me from various
sources. In 245 cases the patient was removed to hospital for
treatment, and home nursing was provided in 182 cases. There
were 9 deaths; with one exception the deaths were all of children
of two years and under. In seven cases broncho-pneumonia was
the complication causing death, and in the remaining two cases
measles was accompanied by gastro-enteritis.
WHOOPING COUGH.
The County of London Regulations referred to in the previous
paragraph apply also to whooping cough and replaced the Bermondsey
Regulations as from Ist October, 1938.
One hundred and one cases of whooping cough were notified
during the year, and an additional 38 cases of the disease came to
my notice in various ways ; 42 cases were removed to hospital
for treatment, and in 4 cases nursing was provided at home.
There were unfortunately four deaths due in each case to pneumonia.
