Gardens, Boot Street and Drysdale Street, the particulars being entered in the
Vestry's register.
Where a house is registered under the By-laws the Vestry are empowered to
proceed directly for a penalty without the serving of sanitary notices; and this is
advantageous in dealing with insanitary conditions arising from want of attention to
cleanliness, and to overcrowding.
BAKEHOUSES.
These now number 88. of which on inspection 73 were found with respect to
their sanitary condition to be satisfactory, 12 fairly so, and three were unsatisfactory.
One bakehouse has been added to the list during the year, and the use of
six has been discontinued. Extensive drainage and other works were necessary to
the three unsatisfactory bakehouses. Cleansing and whitewashing of the walls and
minor insanitary conditions required attention in several cases, which were satisfactorily
dealt with under the superintendence of the Vestry's officers.
SLAUGHTER HOUSES,
These now number 17, the use of two having been discontinued since last year.
On inspection 13 were found to be in a satisfactory condition, and the remaining four
fairly so. In three instances want of sufficient attention to cleanliness was observed
and the proprietors were cautioned. All parts of the Slaughter house and its fittings
ought to be thoroughly washed down and cleansed within three hours from the
completion of the slaughtering. In 13, sheep only are killed. There were 17 applications
for the license of the London County Council. Objection was made by the
Council's inspector in one case, the proprietor having been fined 40/- and 2/- costs
for infringing the Council's Bye-laws, through allowing blood to enter a drain; blood
from slaughtered animals should as far as practicable be caught and placed in suitably
constructed vessels, furnished with close fitting covers, and under no circumstances
should it be allowed to enter any drain or sewer. The license was not refused.
COWHOUSES.
These number 14, and on inspection nine were in a satisfactory condition, four
were fairly satisfactory, and the condition of one was unsatisfactory, In three
instances a want of proper attention to cleanliness and lime washing was observed,
and the proprietors were cautioned. The upper parts of the inner surface of the
walls of all cowhouses are required by the regulation to be cleansed and lime-washed
twice a year, in the Spring and Autumn, and oftener if necessary, and all parts of the
cowshed within five feet of the floor should be cleansed as often as may be necessary
to keep them in a clean condition. All dung and offensive litter should be removed
from the premises at frequent intervals so as to prevent nuisance.
