THE SHELTER.
The temporary accommodation provided by the Vestry at No. 18, Branch place,
Hoxton, for persons obliged to vacate their dwellings to allow of efficient measures
being taken as to disinfection was used during the year on seven occasions. Th
particulars are set forth in the following table:—

Altogether twenty-three persons occupied the Shelter, which is under the charge
of a female caretaker who resides on the premises.
DISINFECTANTS.
From June 13th to September 80th there was the usual distribution of packets
of disinfecting powder at the Town Hall. There were 2,104 applicants, 2,500 halfpound
packets or just over 11 cwt. of 'Sanitas' disinfecting powder were given away
at a cost of £6 10s. The usual enquiries were made in each case, and numbers of insanitary
conditions came under the notice of the Vestry's sanitary officers. About
half of a 26 gallon cask of carbolic acid was used at a cost of £2 18s. 6d. mainly in
connection with special cases of infectious diseases, for flushing house drains, and
cleansing floors and woodwork of dwelling rooms in certain cases, for cleansing at the
public mortuary, and for other special purposes.
PUBLIC MORTUARY.
The number of dead bodies received into the public mortuary during the year
was 404.
In the subjoined table are set forth the number of bodies yearly removed to the
mortuary during the years 1876-95.
