being double in 1892 what it was 1887, and the figures show that this holds good
throughout the country. It will also be observed that the figures for Shoreditch are
lower than those for the Metropolis and for the rest of England.
SCARLET FEVER (Scarlatina).
The number of cases notified was 697, as compared with 592 in 1895, 487 in
1894, and 1007 in 1893. There were 38 deaths as against 29 in 1895, 26 in 1894, and
38 in 1893. The death-rate from this disease was 0.31 per 1000 inhabitants in the
Parish, being 0.27 in Shoreditch South, 0.17 in Hoxton New Town, 0.28 in Hoxton
Old Town and 0.42 in Haggerston. Persons suffered from scarlet fever throughout
the parish at the rate of 5.7 per 1000 inhabitants, the attack rate being 5.6 per 1000
in Shoreditch South, 4.9 in Hoxton New Town, 5.4 in Hoxton Old Town and 6.4 in
Haggerston.
The fatality of the disorder was slightly higher as compared with that of last year,
5.4 per cent. of those attacked dying, as against 4.8 per cent. in 1895. Of the 38
deaths registered as due to this disease, 29 were of children under five years of age,
of the 697 attacks, 241 were in children under the age of five, the fatality of the disease
therefore amongst children under this age was much greater than amongst those over
five years of age, the mortality being 12 per cent. in the former, as compared with 1.9
in the latter. In 1895 the mortality amongst children under five years was 9.9 per
cent. and amongst those over five years of age it was 1.8 per cent.
With one exception all the fatal cases W6re amongst children under the age of
fifteen.
In the subjoined table is shown the distribution of the notifications and fatal
cases amongst males and females in the parish and its four sub-districts.
