There were 99 deaths from valvular disease of the heart and 72 from heart disease
not stated to be due to valvular trouble. There were 37 deaths attributed to enteritis,
most of which were of children under twelve months old, and 24 to peritonitis.
There were 17 deaths from cirrhosis of the liver, a disease usually caused by the
excessive use of alcohol and 18 deaths were certified as due to drink. Brights disease
caused 70 deaths as compared with 57 last year. Of the diseases classed as
developmental, prematurity including debility at birth cause 106, various forms of
congenital malformation 25, and old age 74 deaths. Of the 103 deaths due to violence,
11 were suicidal. Diseases classed as constitutional caused 85 deaths, of which 57
were certified as being due to cancer, as compared with 62 in 1895, 80 in 1894, and
67 in 1898. The death rate due to cancer was 0.45 per 1000 inhabitants as against
0.50 in 1895, 0.65 in 1894, and 0.54 in 1893. The deaths from cancer registered in
the metropolis during 1896 were equal to an annual rate of 0.87 per thousand of the
population.
The 57 deaths from cancer in Shoreditch do not include any of the deaths
certified as due to malignant disease. The majority of the deaths occurred amongst
people aged between 35 and 70 years; the deaths being more numerous between 45
and 55 than in any other 10 years age period. There were 30 females died from this
cause as compared with 27 males. The excess of female deaths was due to the number
of cases where the breast and uterus were the seats of the disease, if these be excluded
there is a considerable excess of deaths amongst males.
Respecting the public institutions situate within the parish, the number and
distribution of the deaths of parishioners and non-parishioners occurring therein
