There is nothing to guarantee that the new buildings proposed to be erected on
the areas, ostensibly for 428 persons, would not subsequently be occupied by a greater
number of persons, and there is nothing in the Housing of the Working Classes
Act, 1890, requiring any additional cubic space per head to that occupied by the
existing population. Although the Vestry would prefer the buildings proposed to
be put on the areas to be occupied by only 42S persons they could be occupied by
800 persons without infringing the Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1890, if
they were somewhat increased in height and the dwelling space limited to the
present amount per head.
If new buildings are to bo erected to provide accommodation for nearly double
the number of persons at present proposed to be provided for, it may possibly double
the expense, and as the Loudon County Council will defray one-halt' of the cost of
the schemes, the opinion of the Council upon this momentous question is
important.
A communication has been addressed to the Council, enclosing the necessary
infoimation in reference to these schemes since the last inquiry.
East of Chalton Street Area.—The Improvement Scheme originally adopted for
this Area has been reconsidered, and a further improved scheme was adopted in its
place on 11th May, 1898.
