Area and Population.
Acres. Estimated Population.
1564 114,900
The population of Deptford to the middle of 1923 has been
estimated by the Registrar-General as 114,900. This estimate has
been based on the adjusted 1921 figures, after allowing for the varying
rate of natural increase as evidenced by the births and deaths, and of
migration as indicated from other sources, such as the changes in the
numbers on the Parliamentary Register and the migration returns
from the Board of Trade.
The population for each of the various wards, based on this estimate,
was as follows :—
East 21,776 South 13,338
North 24,445 * South-East 13,369
North-West 24,590 South-West 17,382
As the Borough has an area of 1,564 acres, the density of the
population on this estimate is 73 persons per acre approximately.
Births.
Births. Birth rate
per 1,000.
2,428 21.1
The total number of births registered in the Borough was 2,286
and of these 85 were transferred to other districts, as the permanent
addresses of the parents were outside this Borough. Similarly, 227
births occurring outside of the Borough, in maternity hospitals, were
transferred to Deptford, making a total of 2,428 births in all belonging
to Deptford. Of these, 1,210 were males and 1,218 were females.
This figure gives a birth-rate of 21.1 per 1,000 of the estimated population,
as compared with 23-1 for the year 1922.
The birth-rate for England and Wales for 1923 was 19.7
,, „ the 105 County Boroughs and Great Towns was 20.4
„ „ the 157 Smaller Towns was 19.8
„ „ the County of London was 20.2
The rate for Deptford was therefore higher than the average for
the country as a whole. Table I shows the number of births and
birth-rates for the past ten years :—
