Poor Law Infirmaries in their areas. The Public Health Committee
of the Borough Council agreed that the principle was a desirable one and
referred the matter to the Medical Officer of Health to confer with the
Medical Superintendent of the Greenwich and Deptford Hospital for
further report. The arrangements finally agreed to were of a very
satisfactory nature and were finally welcomed by the County Council
who had asked for information as to any steps taken in the matter.
The Tuberculosis Officer now visits the Greenwich and Deptford
Hospital once a week on a fixed day and is given a list and directed to
the wards where Deptford patients suffering from tuberculosis are
situated. Here a sheet is found attached to the usual case paper for
the Tuberculosis Officer's suggestions as to whether sanatorium or other
treatment is necessary. His suggestions are carefully considered by
the Medical Officers of the Institution. These patients remain under
the control of the Greenwich Guardians and their Medical Superintendent
as to treatment and date of discharge. By this scheme the
Deptford Tuberculosis Officer is able to maintain continuity of
supervision, and co-ordination is achieved in the work of public
authorities in dealing with tuberculosis. The Tuberculosis Officer is
able to obtain information from the case sheets, of value to the Public
Health Department. He learns the date of discharge of the patients
and so is in a position to advise the Secretary of the Tuberculosis Care
Committee.
Small-pox. No cases occurred during the year but the Medical
Officer's services were requisitioned from lime to time for consultation
in suspicious cases.
Smoke Abatement. Numerous observations were made by the
Inspectors and warning letters were sent. No prosecution was undertaken
during the year.
Applications for Milk. Where a fourth application for milk is
made by an employed person, enquiry is made as a routine of his
employer to confirm the wages stated on the application form. During
the year a small number of discrepancies were ascertained, and in these
cases the parents were invited to explain the discrepancy at the Committee
meeting. With one exception repayments were made by the
parents to account for such discrepancies.
