GENTLEMEN,
On behalf of Dr. Whitehouse (who joined H.M. Forces in
September, 1916), I have the honour of submitting the Annual
Report on the health of the Borough during the past year.
The instructions of the Local Government Board with regard to
Annual Reports of Medical Officers of Health included a suggestion
that in view of the paper shortage, Reports for 1916 should be as brief
as possible, and in fact should only be regarded as "interim Reports."
I have therefore contented myself with submitting nothing more
than a summary of the work done in respect of the more important
matters.
Owing in part to the excellent arrangements made by Dr. Whitehouse
but chiefly to the zeal and loyalty of the staff, the work of the Department
has been carried out most satisfactorily.
To all members of the Staff I tender my sincere thanks.
I have at the same time to acknowledge my indebtedness to the
Chairman and Members of the Public Health Committee for the
courtesy and consideration they have always shown me in the discharge
of my duties.
