These two diseases are grouped together, as they are symptomatic
of each other and the terms are regarded as synonymous. This
method is also adopted by the Registrar-General, and therefore allows
of comparison. The total number of notifications received was 258,
relating to 253 cases. Of the number notified, 29 were errors of
diagnosis and hospital cases, reducing the number of cases to 224
compared with 222, 165, and 152 for the previous three years.
Twenty-five deaths were registered during the year, as compared
with 20, 11, and 15, for the three previous years.
The rate of mortality was 0.23 per 1,000, and for the three previous
years 0.18, 0.10, and 0.14 respectively.
