Street Paving.
On presenting a report of your Medical Officer of Health on
Infantile Mortality to the Council in December, 1911, the Public
Health Committee made several recommendations, one of which was
as follows:—
"That it be an instruction to the Works Committee to take into
consideration the paving of the streets of congested areas with a surface
of jointless and impervious material, with a view to the best
possible cleansing of such streets in the interests of public health."
The Works Committee is certainly to be congratulated upon the
way this recommendation is being carried out. The following streets in
the East Ward have now been asphalted :—
High Street Addey Street Bronze Street
Speedwell Street Bevil Street Frankham Street
Hales Street Blank Street Norval Street
Stanhope Street Hosier Street
The advantages of having roads paved with asphalt presenting a
smooth, impervious surface—easily cleansed by rain, water cart and
hosepipe—are particularly noticeable in narrow streets. The absence
of puddles, after rain and the freedom from dust in the dry weather are
all important where the street has frequently to be the playing ground
of the children. The Works Committee deserves every encouragement
to continue this kind of paving, especially in narrow streets, from a
public health standpoint.
