Unfortunately these are not all the deaths that should be
ascribed to Diarrhcea, for it is a well known fact, and one too to
which the Royal College of Physicians of London, the report
of whose Special Committee I append, have this year drawn
attention, that many deaths which should rightly be returned as from
Diarrhœa are certified as Enteritis, Gastro-enteritis, Mucoenteritis,
and Gastric Catarrh, and are, therefore, entered as
Diseases of the Digestive System, and consequently are not included
under the heading of Zymotic Diseases.

In the returns for the year I find that some 236 deaths were so returned. They occurred as follows:—

1st Quarter.2nd Quarter.3rd Quarter,4th Quarter.The Year.
Under 1 year121013515172
1 to 5 years2323432
Over 5 years2517832
Total161817527236

Frequently, too, many deaths are included under the heading of Debility and Marasmus and Atrophy, which rightly might have been ascribed to Diarrhcea. The returns from these have been as follows:—

1st Quarter.2nd Quarter.3rd Quarter.4th Quarter.The Year.
Under 1 year62398260243
1 to 5 years221510
Over 5 years11
Total64418366254

the latter diseases, which it will be noticed are abnormally fatal in
the Summer quarter, I will not pursue the subject further beyond
