MORTALITY FROM THE SEVERAL ZYMOTIC DISEASES.
Small Pox.
Not for two years have there been any deaths from Small Pox,
and in 14 years there have occurred only 14, or an average of one
death per annum. The last occasion when this disease was
extensively and fatally prevalent was in 1885, when 129 deaths
were registered.
Towards the end of the year (December) cases of the disease
occurred in Hackney, but so far it has not spread into Islington,
and it is very unlikely that it will do so now, as all the cases were
promptly isolated.
They are arranged in the following tabular statement in periods of five years, so that its prevalence at the several periods may be the more easily differentiated.
Periods. | Deaths as given in Medical Officer of Health's Report. | Deaths as given by the Registrar-General. | Deaths as distributed by the Registrar-General. |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
1856-60 | 89 | 545 | Deaths were not distributed before 1881. |
1861-65 | 213 | 772 | |
1866-70 | 250 | 1,026 | |
1871-75 | 432 | 573 | |
1876-80 | 210 | 423 | |
1881-85 | 246 | 418 | 379 |
1886-90 | 3 | 1 | 3 |
1891-95 | 9 | 16 | 9 |
1896-99 (4 years) | 2 | 1 | 2 |
Deaths as given in the second column are altogether understated,
because previous Medical Officers of Health did not include in their
