Fourth Quarter.—1,759 deaths were registered, equal to a deathrate
of 20.17 per annum. The deaths were 209 above the corrected
average, and the death-rate (20.17) was 2.40 above the mean of the
years 1885-98.
The chief factors in the increased death-rate are included under
the heading of Respiratory Diseases, which numbered 480 as against
237 in the corresponding quarter of 1898 and more than accounts
for the greater mortality. The chief items were Bronchitis 288,
and Pneumonia 161 deaths. These numbers are respectively an
increase of 155 and 78 on the returns of the previous and the corresponding
quarter.
