Let it be hoped that there may be no outbreak of small pox in
Islington while its vaccination defences are in their present weak
state, for if there should be one the authorities responsible for their
present neglected condition will find that having sown the wind
their harvest will be the whirlwind.
DISINFECTION.
Premises.—2,676 rooms, as against 1,033 in 1898, were disinfected
with sulphurous acid gas. 527 of these were treated in the
first quarter, 516 in the second, 747 in the third, and 868 in the
fourth.

In previous years the number were:—

18963,495 rooms.
18972,701 „
18982,358 „
18092,676 „

In 1,375 instances the walls were stripped of their papers, and
at the same time the ceilings and woodwork were cleansed.
In 1896 1,045 rooms, in 1897 1,158 rooms, and in 1898 1,033
rooms were similarly treated. This work entails a great deal of
labour, and engaged throughout the year a weekly average of eight
men, exclusive of the man engaged in the disinfection with sulphurous
acid gas.
The two succeeding tables give particulars respecting the
disinfection ,cleansing and stripping of rooms after infectious diseases
had occurred in them.
