INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN PUBLIC ELEMENTARY
SCHOOLS.
Inquiries into the notifiable infectious diseases showed that
1,087 the sufferers were children attending Public Elementary
Schools, and that 670 scholars, who had not been themselves
attacked, lived in houses in which the diseases were present.
Of the 1087 scholars who were attacked
725 suffered from Scarlet Fever
290 „ „ Diphtheria
61 ,, ,, Enteric Fever
11 „ „ from other notifiable diseases.

These figures are higher than those which were known in the two preceding years, though not so high as those of 1896.

The number of scholars, who live in infected houses, discovered
in attendance at school was 670, or 56 more than in 1898, but
respectively 154 and 10 less than in 1896 and 1897. The particulars
for each disease for these years is as follows:
