DEATHS
In compliance with the instructions of the Registrar-
General, deaths of officers and men of the armed forces
of this and other nations admitted to hospitals in the
Borough, or dying at their own homes, are not taken
into account in these statistics.
The returns of the Local Registrars give a total of
],784 civilian deaths, but as this number includes 434
non-residents who died in Bethnal Green hospitals and
eleven other non-residents who died sudden or violent
deaths whilst temporarily within our borders, these 445
must be excluded. On the other hand, the returns of
transferable deaths forwarded from Somerset House contain
particulars of 426 deaths of persons ordinarily inhabiting
Bethnal Green who have died in various parts of
the Metropolis, and these must be added. I may here
mention that these particulars are always closely scrutinised
by us on receipt, and frequently require adjustment
on our part before final acceptance. I beg leave
here to record my grateful thanks to Mr. David Thomas,
the Clerk to the Guardians, for his able assistance in
tracing the past history of persons removed to, and
dying at, lunatic asylums in or near London.
