Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Bethnal Green, E. 2.
May, 1920
To the Mayor, the Aldermen and
Councillors of the Metropolitan
Borough of Bethnal Green.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present to you the Annual Report
for 1919, on the Health of the Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal
Green.
I only took up my office on September 15th, when I succeeded
Dr. G.P. Bate. Although this report emanates from myself, I was
only responsible for the Health of the Borough for the latter
portion of the year, and for the condition of the Borough in the
earlier part of the year I have had to rely on figures collected and
information given me by Dr. G. P. Bate.
Many important matters are only touched on in this report,
but I hope in my report for 1920 to make a detailed examination
of all branches of public health work in the light of the fuller
experience of conditions in the Borough which I shall have gained
by then.
Owing to the heavy cost that must be entailed in printing this
Report it has been condensed as much as possible, and only
essential information has been included.
In conclusion, I should like to express my thanks to members
of the Council, and especially the Public Health Committee, for the
kindly consideration they have shown me during the period in
which I was taking up my new duties.
I must also tender my thanks for the support I have received
from my brother officers both in the Public Health and other
departments.
I am, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
GEOFFREY EUGENE OATES,
Medical Officer of Health.
