BEADY STREET AREA.
In March, 1914, the Public Health Committee
became aware that representations had been made to
the London County Council by the Local Government
Board on the subject of the Brady Street Area since
the date of the Inquiry. The Town Clerk was directed
to communicate with the Local Government Board,
asking whether, in view of the very lengthy period that
the area had been suffered to remain in a condition
dangerous and injurious to the health of the inhabitants,
and the serious concern of the Borough Council that
proper steps should be taken without any further delay
to deal with the area in the manner provided by law,
the Board could afford the Council information as to
the position of the matter, and, in particular, as to the
substance, if not the terms, of the report of Major
Norton. In reply, the Board stated that it was in communication
with the London County Council on the
subject, and transmitted a copy of a letter dated February
16th, 1914, from the Board to the London County
Council.
The letter stated that the Board understood that
the County Council was prepared to consider further
the question of dealing with the Brady Street area,
though unwilling, at that time, to proceed by way of
an improvement scheme under Part I. of the Act of
1890, and the Board desired to defer for the present
coming to any formal decision under Section 10 of the
Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1890, and Section 4
