15. The Natural Increase of the population. In spite of
the high mortality—Woolwich—more fortunate than many towns.
had an excess of births over deaths of 486 compared with 1,148
in 1917.
INFANT MORTALITY
16. The deaths under one year were 268 compared with 214
in 1917. The infant mortality (deaths under one year per 1,000
births) was 104. This is the highest rate recorded since 1907.
