The s.s. "Pyrrhus" arrived from Shanghai on the 9th April, having landed a
case of Small-pox at Hong Kong on the 29th February. All on board were vaccinated,
and disinfection done at Hong Kong. No further case occurred.
The s.s. "Herefordshire," of Liverpool, arrived from Rangoon on the
14th April, having landed a case of Small-pox at Suez on the 31st March. All
vaccinations and disinfection were carried out at Suez. No further case occurred.
The s.s. "Highland Pride" arrived from Buenos Ayres on the 7th May. On
the 20th March a steward was taken ill with headache, backache and Small-pox lesions.
He was landed at Flores Island on 25th March. All on board were vaccinated. Effects
were landed and hospital quarters and clothing disinfected. No fresh case occurred.
The s.s. "Prometheus," of Liverpool, arrived from Hong Kong on the 8th May.
On 7th April a Pilgrim on board was taken ill with symptoms suspicious of Small-pox.
He was landed at Kamaran on 19th April. Effects and quarters were disinfected. No
fresh case occurred.
The s.s. "Hindoo," of Hull, arrived from Cochin on the 8th June. On the
20th April a member of the crew was taken ill and sent to hospital on the 22nd as a
case of Malaria. He is reported to have died from Small-pox on the 27th April.
Infected quarters on the ship were fumigated and all bedding thrown overboard. No
further case occurred. The crew remained on board.
The s.s. "Crane," of London, 118,457, arrived from Smyrna on the 9th July.
On the 23rd June a case of Small-pox was removed from this vessel at Messina. The
crew were vaccinated there. Infected quarters on the vessel were disinfected and
also all bedding and clothing. No fresh case occurred.
