BIRTHS.
The number of births registered in the borough during 1916 was 4,310.
From information received from the Registrar-General, the excess of births
to parishioners occurring outside the borough over births to non-parishioners
occurring inside the borough was 220.
The net number of births for St. Pancras registered during 1916 was,
therefore, 4,530, making an annual birth-rate of 20.7 per 1,000 total population.
In Table 1 (page 60), the corresponding rates for the past five years will be
found. It will be seen that there has been a marked fall in the birth-rate in
the last two years.
530 births occurred in Public Institutions in the borough, equal to 12.3 per
cent. of the total births which took place in the borough.
Illegitimacy.
Of the 4,310 births which were registered in the borough 272, or 6.3 per
cent., were returned as illegitimate.
Of the 4,530 births to parishioners within and without the borough 318, or
7.0 per cent., were registered as illegitimate. The corresponding figures for
1915, 1914 and 1913 were 5.4, 4.1 and 4.7 per cent. respectively.
The Notification of Births Act, 1907.
Notifications were received during the year of 4,185 births, including 4,061
live births, or 94.2 per cent. of the number of births registered.

In the following table the total births notified and registered in the borough are classified according to the Registration Sub-Districts and Wards in which the births took place:—
