Inspection of Food [Public Health (London) Act, 1891, Sec. 47].
The Food-Inspectors have kept under regular inspection food exposed or
deposited for sale in slaughterhouses, shops (especially butchers', cooked meat
and fishmongers' shops), stalls, and market places. The inspections of
market streets by district inspectors in the summer were discontinued this
year.

On 32 occasions during the year unsound food has been surrendered by the
owners to the food inspectors and destroyed as trade refuse.
Dairies, Cowsheds, and Milkshops.
Cowsheds.—There were at the end of 1916 five licensed cowsheds in the
borough, as in the previous year. These are registered for 110 cows. They
have been kept under inspection by the food inspectors, 64 inspections
having been made during the year.
Milkshops and Dainet.—18 applications for registration under the Dairies,
Cowsheds, and Milkshops Orders were considered during 1916, and of these
the Council decided to register in 15 cases, and to refuse to register on account
of unsuitability in 3 cases.
The figures in regard to registration of milkshops are set out below:—

At the end of 1916 there were on the register in addition to these 242 retail
milkshops and 5 cowsheds (of which 4 are attached to retail milkshops included
in the 212), 2 persons in respect of premises where only a wholesale milk trade
is done, and 6 itinerant vendors without milkshops.
Legal Proceedings.—No prosecutions were undertaken under the Dairies,
Cowsheds, and Milkshops Order of 1885 and 1886 in respect of the sale of milk
by unregistered persons.
