In the following table are given the age and sex distribution of deaths certified during 1916 as due to (a) declared syphilis, (b) locomotor ataxy and general paralysis of the insane, which are believed by most experts to be late manifestations of the disease, and (c) aortic aneurysm, which many authorities now consider to be at any rate frequently caused by it:—

CANCER.
267 deaths were registered during: 1916 as due to cancer, under the various
names of cancer, carcinoma, epithelioma, scirrhus, rodent ulcer, sarcoma, &c.
This is equal to a death-rate of 1.22 per 1,000 population, and 1.36 per
1,000 civil population.
The sex distribution of the deaths and death-rates is shown in the following table:—

DWELLING HOUSES.
Reference has been made in previous annual reports to the unsatisfactory state
of the housing of the working classes in parts of St. Pancras. A special report
by the Medical Officer of Health was presented to the Council in November,
1916, dealing with the inadequacy of the provision made for individual
families in many tenement-houses, with special reference to the opportunity
afforded by the reversion of such properties to ground landlords upon the
falling in of leases. The report arose out of certain instances in which new
leases had been granted in respect of such tenement houses without any
