visits to notified births, where visits had not been made by the borough staff,
were paid from the centres. For this purpose lists of selected notifications
comprising 500 cases were sent to certain centres, and these cases were visited
to induce the mothers to bring their babies to the consultations.
Expectant Mothers.—The work of the previous year in this direction was
continued during 1916. By an arrangement with University College Hospital
and Middlesex Hospital, which attend a great many St. Pancras women in
their confinements, weekly lists of expectant mothers have been obtained, and
some of these have been visited by the borough staff. In addition some of
the maternity centres have been supplied with names from the lists and have
paid visits. The lists obtained from hospitals comprised 1388 names (1052
from University College Hospital and 336 from Middlesex Hospital), and 692
of these were forwarded to the local centres.
Cards of advice to expectant mothers, drawn up by the Medical Officer of
Health, have been supplied to University College Hospital, Middlesex Hospital
and the Maternity Nursing Association, one card being given to every St.
Pancras expectant mother when she attends there to arrange for her
confinement.
