Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
Four samples of milk were procured during the early morning,
(from 3 to 4 a.m.), from wholesale dealers whilst delivering milk
to the retailer. These samples were genuine.
33 samples of milk were procured on delivery at private houses,
seven of which were reported as being adulterated. Proceedings
were taken in four cases and convictions obtained.
152 samples of milk have been taken on Sundays, either in the
early morning or at mid-day. 16 or 10.5 per cent. were reported
against as being adulterated.
420 samples of milk were taken from milk vendors in the street
during the early morning, (i.e., 5 to 7 a.m.), on week days, and of
these 32 or 7.6 per cent. were reported against.
Ten samples of milk were taken from automatic milk supply
machines and all were reported to be genuine.
In 19 cases the defendants relied on a warranty, and in each
case the Magistrate was satisfied that the milk sold was in the same
condition as received, and therefore dismissed the summonses.
Proceedings were also taken for wilful obstruction. The
vendor preferred to throw the milk down the drain rather than
serve the Inspector. A penalty of £10 was inflicted.
CREAM AND PRESERVED CREAM.
48 samples of cream and 38 of preserved cream were taken
during the year. 16 or 33.3 per cent. of the samples of cream
were reported against as containing a preservative.
Summonses were issued against seven of the vendors, as a
warning, the summonses being withdrawn on payment of costs.
