POPULATION.
In this Report the rates are based on an estimated civil
population of 47,426.
The estimated population for each of the Sub-districts is as
follows:—
The Northern Division of the Borough (lying North of the
middle line of Church Street) has a population of about 15,972;
and in the Southern Division the population is approximately
31,454.
BIRTHS.

During the year 1918 there were only 665 births, viz. :—352 males and 313 females. The birth-rate per 1,000 per annum was therefore 14 0, as against 15 5 for the preceding year.

The illegitimate births numbered 29 ; 15 males and 14 females.
During the year the births notified under the Notification of
Births Act have been compared with the births registered by the
Registrar of Births, and the respective figures are 500 and 665.
