Public Health Offices,
Borough Hall,
Royal Hill, Greenwich, S.E.10.
May, 1924.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit herewith my Annual Report as
Medical Officer of Health for the year 1923, on the health of the
Borough, and it is very gratifying to me to be able to report that
despite the continued prevalence of unemployment, the health
statistics generally show a marked improvement.
The Death Rate is 10.95 per 1,000 of the estimated population,
which is the lowest figure recorded since the Council's inception
and 1.97 lower than that for last year, and 2.92 lower than the
average for the previous 5 years.
The Birth Rate is 20.54 per 1,000, which figure is slightly
higher than that for the County of London.
The Infantile Mortality Rate for the Borough, measured by
the number of deaths under one year to 1,000 births registered,
is 61, which whilst slightly higher than last year's record figure is,
nevertheless, very commendable.
The Zymotic Death Rate of 46 per 1,000 shows an improvement
on last year's figure of .86.

The figures relating to the different constituent parts of the Borough are as follows:—

* This exceptionally high Birth Rate is accounted for by the fact that in
this District are the Council's and "Stonefield" Maternity Homes.
†The "corrected" Birth Rate is 20.54 and the Infantile Mortality Rate
61 per 1,000 Births.
