Milk, &c., Supplied to Nursing and Expectant Mothers
and Young Children.—As last years Report dealt fully with the
method adopted in regard to the distribution of milk, etc. it is
not considered necessary to amplify such remarks.
In August last year the Council were called upon by the Ministry
of Health to make a reduction in the expenditure in respect of the
provision of milk and meals. In order to obviate unnecessary
hardship a special Sub-Committee was appointed to investigate the
whole matter. As a result of their deliberations it was decided to
make a slightly increased charge for milk sold at the various
Centres and further to adopt the Ministry's scale of income in lieu
of the existing scale. By this means it is hoped to keep the expenditure
within the limit suggested by the Ministry.
The following tables shows (a) the amount of milk etc., given
away and number of applicants receiving same, and (b) quantities
sold each quarter. It will be noticed from a perusal of these tables
that since the revised scale was adopted (15th October, 1923) a
marked decrease is shown in the amount of milk distributed free
with a corresponding increase in the amount sold.
