Bakehouses.—One hundred and fourteen inspections have
been made of the various Bakehouses in the Borough and 23
nuisances found therein have been abated.
At the end of the year there were 5 Factory and 39 other
Bakehouses on the Register, 13 of which are underground.
Food and Drugs Acts.—Four hundred and thirty eight
samples havs been purchased under the provisions of the Sale of
Food and Drugs Acts and submitted to the Public Analyst for
analysis, of which 419 were certified to be genuine and 19 adulterated,
the adulterations thus being equivalent to 4.33 per cent.
of the samples taken.
Of the total number of samples purchased, 109 were milk, of
which 7 were certified to be adulterated ; the remaining adulterated
samples were 8 of vinegar, 2 of rice, 1 of butter and 1 of medicine.
Proceedings were taken in 8 cases, resulting in fines and costs
being imposed in 6 instances. The remaining two cases were
dismissed, one on account of warranty proved, and the other the
Magistrate taking the view that the case was not proved. The
summons in this latter instance was taken under the Milk and Dairies
(Amendment) Act 1922 against a milk vendor whose sample was
found upon analysis to contain 7.7 per cent. addition of water.
