SECTION 7.
SANITARY ADMINISTRATION.
The tables on pages 46 to 48 and 53 to 60 summarise, as far
as possible, the Sanitary work of the Department; from this it will
be seen that a total of 16,711 houses and premises have been inspected
or re-inspected during the year ; 1,521 intimation notices
and 222 statutory notices have been served.
It was found necessary to institute Police Court proceedings
in twelve cases during the year, particulars of which are contained
in the table on page 58.
There were altogether throughout the year 658 complaints
registered.
Factories, Workshops and Workplaces.—Two hundred
and twelve inspections have been paid to these premises within
the Borough during the year. There were 197 workshop promises
on the Register at the beginning of the year, 9 have been added
and 31 taken off, leaving a total now on the Register of 175.
This total includes 8 laundries, 14 dressmaking and mantle works,
7 fuel and firewood works, 3 cycle works, 2 milliners, and various
others, including workplaces, such as 4 blacksmiths, 14 barge builders
4 builders' yards, etc.
Included in the Returns relating to Inspections, Defects found,
etc., on page 46, was an instance of a Firm having premises on the
River Bank, such premises being a Workplace without proper
sanitary accommodation. The matter was reported to the Public
Health Committee and instructions were given for proceedings to
be taken out against the occupiers. In the meantime the Firm
withdrew their work from the wharf and carried it on a barge on
the River Thames. The matter was accordingly reported to the
Medical Officer of Health of the Port of London Sanitary Authority
for necessary action.
Outworkers' Register.—Fourteen lists, containing 73 names
have been received from employers within the district. One hundred
and fifty-eight visits of inspection have been paid to these premises.
