To the Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,
I have the honour to submit the Tenth Annual Report on the
work of the Tuberculosis Department. The notifications and
deaths from Tuberculosis in 1922 were as under :—
Notifications. Deaths.
Pulmonary. Non-Pulmonary. Total. Pulmonary. Non-Pulmonary. Total.
218 55 273 120 21 141
and the averages for the ten years, 1912-1921, were :
300 128 — 140 27 —
The notified cases of Pulmonary Tuberculosis were less than
in any previous year and it is hoped that the existing measures
dealing with Tuberculosis will result in a still further reduction
despite such unfavourable conditions as unemployment and overcrowding.
Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis.—The 55 Notifications
comprised :—
21 cases Tuberculosis of Glands (mainly Cervical).
4 ,, „ Bones.
12 ,, ,, Joints.
3 ,, ,, Spine.
6 ,, ,, Brain (Meningitis).
8 ,, „ Abdomen.
1 ease ,, Skin (Lupus).
During the year the Registers were carefully revised, and an
endeavour made to visit every case on the books. Many were
examined either at their homes or at the Dispensary, and at the close
of 1922 it was estimated that the total number of Tuberculous
persons residing in the Borough amounted to 832, as follows :—
Men. Women. Children. Total.
Pulmonary Tuberculosis 216 227 116 559
Non-pulmonary Tuberculosis 18 22 233 273
This is a decrease of 476 from the previous estimate, and apart from
the low incidence this year is mainly explained by the fact that in
many cases, especially children, notified in the earlier years (19121915)
the condition had cleared up and the patients themselves
presented no symptoms and had been apparently well during the
past four or more years. These cases were accordingly struck off
the Register but will be watched as to their future progress.
