on it being pointed out that the present Council were considering
much more extensive housing operations, the Housing Board of
the Ministry of Health expressed their satisfaction, and even went
further than that by suggesting that the real number of houses
that were required for the needs of the Borough was somewhat in
the neighbourhood of 6,000, and that, at any rate, the principle
which the Council should aim at was definitely providing during
the then current year not less than 1,000.
The Council made a compulsory order for the acquisition of
about 40 acres of land, known as the " Hanging Wood Lane Site,"
and in due course entered into possession. It was decided to divide
the site into four sections, No. 1 known as the " Kinveachy Gardens
Site," to accommodate 18 houses ; No. 2, called the " Fairfield
Site," to accommodate 164 houses ; No. 3, the " Allotments Site,"
to accommodate 76 houses, and No. 4, known as the " Pound Park
Site," upon which it was proposed to build 180 houses. A contract
was entered into with Mr. W. J. Maddison, 124-127, Minories, E. 1,
for the erection of the 18 houses on Site No. 1, and at the end of
the period covered by this Report, the Ministry of Health were
considering tenders received by the Council for the erection of a
further 164 houses on the No. 2 Site, and 26 houses proposed to be
erected on the land at the rear of " East Mascalls " (which house
had been acquired for the purpose of conversion into tenements),
the lay-out of which had been approved by the Ministry.
The following is a description of the four different types of houses approved by the London Housing Board to be erected on the Hanging Wood Lane Site :—
