Four children died of Suffocation by being overlaid in bed
during 1919 (compared with 0 from this cause last year); 5 cases
were from drowning, 3 from Burns and Scalds, while accidents
on railways, in vehicular traffic and in building operations, falls,
etc., were responsible for 28 deaths.
The Suicides were 2 by cut or stab, 1 from Drowning, 3 by
Hanging and Strangulation, 1 from Asphyxia, 1 from Poison, 1 by
Shooting, and 1 by other cause.
Ill-Defined Causes. There was no death the cause of which
was not ascertained in 1919.

POOR LAW RELIEF.
According to the circular of the Ministry of Health, respecting
the Annual Reports of the Medical Officers of Health, it is now
necessary that they include some reference to the amount of medical
and other forms of Poor Law Relief in the district. I have accordingly
been in communication with the Clerk to the Greenwich
Board of Guardians on this subject, but have only been favoured
with the information contained in the quarterly statement of persons
in receipt of Poor Law ,Relief in England and Wales, showing
the number of persons in receipt of such relief on the last Saturdays
in October, November and December, 1919, for the whole of the
South-Eastern District of London, which information for the purpose
of this report is, of course, quite useless.
HOSPITAL AND OTHER FORMS OF GRATUITOUS
MEDICAL RELIEF.
The Seamen's Hospital have admitted, treated and maintained
200 Greenwich persons for an average of twenty-four days
each, in addition to which there have been 2,268 Out-patients who
