of the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich.
Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit herewith the Annual Report of
the Medical Officer of Health for the year 1918.
The Birth Rate is 16.61 per 1,000 for Greenwich and 16.1
for the whole of the County of London. The mortality statistics
for the year are, unfortunately, not quite of so satisfactory a
character as we have been in the habit of recording during recent
years, the recorded Death Rate of 19.16 per 1,000 of the estimated
population being slightly higher than 18.9 per 1,000 the Death
Rate for the County of London and 18.2 per 1,000, the figure for
the 96 large towns, although this figure for our local Death Rate
is, in my Opinion, entirely falacious, as it is based upon the
Registrar-General's estimate; of our population, which, in my
opinion, is considerably below the actual number of residents in
the Borough.
The Infantile Mortality Rate for the Borough, measured by
the number of deaths under one year to 1,000 births registered, is
119, an increase from 105, the figure for last year; the figure for
all London is 107, compared with 103 in 1917, and the Borough
average during the last five years, 1913-17 inclusive, is 98.
The Zymotic Death Rate of 1.70 is 0.28 per 1,000 above the
corresponding figure for last year.
